Vote for me on Facebook!

If you are on Facebook, I would love it if you voted for me in the Kia Forte contest. I think you can go directly here to do so - but if not, you can add the app and my photo is recently added, the title is "Getting licked on the face, not my forte" and it looks like this:Yes, my husband thinks it's very funny to act like he's going to kiss me but instead lick me on the face. Ugh.

I know when another photo already has something like 3500 votes (to my 6) and it's of two cute kids that I'm probably not going to win. But I'm an eternal optimist.

Giveaways

I hope if you have a chance you'll read today's earlier post about the art exhibition. It just got a little long so I decided to do the giveaways list in a new post.

Between the miscarriage and the art show I am a little behind on my giveaway postings. So if you enter a lot of giveaways please check that you haven't already entered these ones. Otherwise, I hope there is something new here for you!

Art exhibition stories

Well, I am back after a long weekend at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. I don't know how many of you have done trade shows but it is absolutely exhausting. It's not just the set-up, the long hours (Friday, for example, I was downtown at 6:30 am - meaning awake at 4:30 - and didn't get home until 9 pm, then worked until 11 at home), and the exposure to the elements (we had about 2 hours of torrential downpour on Saturday, the rest was very hot and sunny), it's constantly being 'up and on' that is so tiring. If you have worked retail you know what I mean. My smile was so fake by Sunday it was more like a snarl. It's a wonder people talked to me at all.

Nevertheless, it was a good show for me as always. It was my tenth (!) year at the TOAE and despite a city workers' strike (that means garbage hasn't been picked up in the city of Toronto for more than three weeks now) and the weather, the show went on much as usual. I had a few crazy things happen though!

On Saturday we were standing away from the booth a bit, chatting with friends, when a squirrel ran into my booth. He sat there for a few seconds, looked at the paintings, then decided to jump into one. Not onto - he wasn't trying to climb it - but into! My paintings are of water if that helps set the scene. So he jumped headfirst into a water painting and of course bounced off. He sat there for a second, considering, then made a second attempt! At this point, my husband brought our dog into the booth and chased the squirrel out. The squirrel then ran around the back and up the walls of the booth, along the top and was all set for a third attempt when the dog finally scared it away. Luckily the painting was only lightly scratched by squirrel claws and easily repaired with a fresh coat of varnish.

Another weird thing that happened was that a young man (late teens or early twenties) came into my booth, and considered the paintings for a long time. Then he walked up to me and said loudly, "Don't you think you're overcharging?"
I hardly knew what to say. I explained that I have been painting for many years, that I exhibit internationally, that my work has been featured in magazines (most recently on the cover of January's Style at Home magazine), on television (often on HGTV) and is in galleries that set my prices. I mentioned that he could find comparable prices at many of my peers' booths around the show. I talked about how this is my job, and one painting not only represents three weeks' worth of work for me, but I also incur the hidden costs of studio expenses, supplies, advertising, web design, professional fees and taxes. I talked about how my hourly wage is probably less than he makes per hour, yet I probably (based on his age) have more education. I mentioned the numerous paintings I'd sold the day before (not to mention over 12 years of exhibiting my work) and suggested that fair market economy demonstrated that the valuation of my paintings was appropriate.

"Yeah," he said, "but it's just water." And walked away.

I shouldn't have bothered even talking to him. I'm not sure what he was trying to accomplish by making such a comment. Was he trying to say he loved it but couldn't afford it? Was he a painter who isn't successful? Was he just ignorant? Was he trying to antagonize me personally, or just looking for a fight or someone to rant to? I have no idea what his motivation was. It was simply bizarre.

The only other thing that was a little nasty about the weekend was that there was a bench directly behind my booth that became a camp site for some homeless guys. They did not disturb me and were not even visible from the front of the booth - in fact, they were downright helpful to some of my fellow artists with less stable booths, when a gust of wind threatened to topple displays. But they smoked CONSTANTLY and so I spent the entire weekend engulfed in cigarette smoke. It was pretty gross. I feel like my lungs need a bath.

Anyway that was my weekend - I had a lot of friends and family stop by, even some of my blog readers which was very cool! I got a chance to catch up with some artist friends who I don't see much. I spent the entire weekend with my husband which was great. And made some money which is always a relief! I got lots of feedback on my work as well which is nice. Being an artist is a pretty solitary pursuit most of the time so it's nice to get out and hear what people think. Overall it was a good weekend. But I sure am glad to be home and finished with the show for another year!

Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition!

Here's where I'll be all weekend! The annual Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. If you're in the area do stop by and say hi! It's at Nathan Phillips Square, right downtown in Toronto. There will be about 500 artists there exhibiting all original artwork - and it's juried, so you can be sure it's quality stuff.

This will be my tenth year (!) exhibiting my paintings at the biggest outdoor art show in Canada. You can check out my website (if you're interested) here, or just come on down to booth #102 in the Pink section (at the southwest corner of the square).

Slow Death by Rubber Duck - book review

You have all heard about BPA (bisphenol A) by this point, especially moms, but have you given much attention to some of the other scary chemicals in your life? Parabens, phthalates, PCB's, non-stick coatings, pesticides, mercury, triclosan.... new chemicals are coming out all the time and are 'assumed safe' until something horrible happens (think DDT) or until consumers step out and complain (think BPA, recently banned in kids' products in Canada after a huge upcry by parents). By the way, BPA is still approved for things like can linings and many other food containers so if you eat canned food or canned pop, you're still getting it.

Of course we all want a clean, fresh-smelling, bug-, weed-, and germ-free environment. But is all that desire for 'clean' living slowly killing us?

Authors Rick Smith, Bruce Lourie and Sarah Dopp took a novel (sorry) approach to exploring this subject. Rick and Bruce spent four days using products that contain scary stuff. These were not beakers of chemicals or tanks of strange gases, but rather the products we use every day as consumers. Things like shaving cream, hand soap, shampoo and other skin care products, non-stick frying pans and plastic food containers, cans of Coke and a stain-repellant sofa. They tested their blood levels of toxic substances before and after their experiment and made some scary connections between the products we use and an assortment of problems like cancer, reproductive issues, neurological damage, the list goes on. Yikes.

I recommend this book if you are interested in your health and that of your family (who isn't?). It's not preachy, it's not hard to read, it's not boring. I found it at my local library after hearing an interview with the authors on CBC radio.

One comment that particularly resonated with me was about food-safe plastics. Here's the phrase to remember: "4, 5, 1 or 2 - all the rest are bad for you". Take a look at the number in the recycling symbol and see what kind of plastics your food is stored or packaged in. I was shocked to see my favourite yogourt cups, Astro Original - one of the few that meets my vegetarian requirement of not containing gelatin - is packed in #6 plastic, which can leach styrene. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies styrene as a potential human carcinogen. Not cool, Parmalat!

I also still recommend the CBC doc The Disappearing Male, if you haven't seen it yet. You can find it on YouTube as well as the CBC website.

Celebrating a life

I am just watching the memorial service for Michael Jackson. It's amazing how many lives one person can touch.

Hmm,

This last week... wasn't really where I wanted my blog to go - the journal thing, I mean. Sorry about the online venting. Some things just needed to come out!

So I'm making brownies, and thinking about getting on with things, and to start here are just a couple giveaways. I'm sticking with the mum & baby theme. I'm gonna be there one day :)

Grief and Kindness

I am still learning about coping with grief. I lost my father in 2001 and thought I had an understanding of how grief works.

I completely skip the 'anger' step. My first reaction to my aunt telling me my father had died was to say, "No." As if by saying that I could make it so. No, of course he didn't die. I still need him. He can't have died. He was too good. He didn't deserve it. Such a horrible thing is simply not possible. Of course it was not only possible but true. I spent the next two weeks alternately crying and being ridiculously, almost farcically organized, trying to get his affairs in order to help my mother. I'm not sure, looking back, that such a rush to sort out the details of his death was really helpful. It had to be done, but not necessarily so quickly. I'm sure she felt overwhelmed, not only by the loss of the man she'd been with for 25 years, but by my propelling her towards the future.

The sadness of losing my father never goes away. I think of him often, and wonder what he would have thought about the way my life has gone. I wished he could have walked me down the aisle at my weddings (I actually had three weddings - the first, too young, ended in divorce - the second a secret civil ceremony that preceded a ceremonial wedding in Mexico). I wish I could talk to my dad about things. I miss his humour, his intelligence, his love of words and technology.

And now dealing with another loss I have found it to be strangely similar. When I left my doctor's office on Friday morning, I told the baby, "No. We're not losing you - we're keeping you. No, something isn't wrong, you're alright." Denial, plain and simple. At the ultrasound when I saw that empty gestational sac before the second ultrasound, I heard what the technician was saying but my thought was, "No. I know I'm pregnant. I know there's a baby." When the second ultrasound showed the fetus I felt elated - until I clued in to what she didn't really want to come out and tell me. There was no heartbeat. The fetus was too small. This news sank in. And I knew. I went directly from denial to acceptance. My husband was convinced there was a dating discrepancy (the technician's 'long shot') but I knew. (And my descent into grief was not helped by him shouting at me that I didn't know what was going on. I did. Of course, he wasn't skipping the 'anger' step there!)

So the grief goes like this. I'm sad. I cry. It hits me in the shower, or after I see my gorgeously pregnant friends, or when I start singing and realize that before I had been singing to the baby and now I'm just singing to myself. It hits me when I actually want a piece of chocolate - something I was completely turned off by for those two and a half months - and know that I can have it. Or when I make a cup of tea and reach for the decaf, then realize I might as well have regular. Or when I put on clothes and see I still have the baby bump that hasn't gone away yet.

But sometimes I'm happy, too. I am looking forward to the future. I know that I can get pregnant, and that pregnancies, in general, have an 85% chance of surviving. So the odds are good, unless something bigger is wrong with us. I just fell on the wrong side of the odds this time.

After the traumatic days since last Friday, I truly felt the need of some kindness. And I have received kindness - in some expected places, and some unexpected.

My husband has been so great. Once he realized this really was happening, he has been offering me more comfort than (I'm sure) he's comfortable with. Lots of hugs, he calls during the day more often, just to say hi and ask me if I'm feeling alright. He's taken me out to eat, he's made mini-vacation plans, he's kept us busy doing productive things. He's been so sweet. And he's let me know that he really wants to be a parent and that he wants, like me, to try again when we can. He's taking care of me.

My mother also has been sweet. She gives me practical advice and tells me stories. She is far away but we've talked on the phone and she's just so sincerely sorry and sad for us.

My best friend is six months pregnant but she lost a pregnancy last summer so she has been so understanding and positive for me. She shared her experience and also gave me hope as she told me that she and others she knows who lost babies were able to get pregnant again quickly. She cut short other plans to come visit us and brought hugs and chocolate. She listened to the awful details I just needed to share with someone, and made the right comments, and just was there to listen while I poured my heart out.

And here is the unexpected kindness I have found. I have had so many emails and comments of support from people who read my blog posts about what happened and the other women on the babycenter forum. I was in a 'birth club' and shared our loss with the other pregnant women there who are due in January. They were so nice and I could tell really cared and were sorry for what happened. And so many women who read my blog sent such sweet emails and notes, just to say they were thinking of me.

One blogger went way beyond though, and this was the most unexpected kindness of all. Today I received a package from Jenn at Beautiful Calling. In it were such lovely treats. I just kept saying, "Oh, my gosh" as I pulled out each thing wrapped in pretty tissue. A book to take my mind off my troubles. An amazing set from the Body Shop that will be a real luxury for me, I can't wait until my shower tomorrow to try some of the goodies out. Chocolates - because I really do need all the endorphins I can get right now. And to top it all off, homemade cookies. Jenn, a very public thank you for your generosity of spirit and your kindness to a virtual stranger - I hope I can call you instead, a friend.

I need baby shower help!

Okay, as you may know (because I keep going on about it), I have SEVEN ridiculously pregnant friends who I need to come up with baby shower gifts for. And I hate baby registries! I've made one baby quilt and crocheted one baby blanket, so I have two gifts ready to go, but that leaves a lot of gifts. So I wanted to ask if anyone has some ideas.

What's the best gift you received for your little one? Something practical like clothes, washcloths, bottles and wipes, or something not so practical, like a mobile or wall art? I like making quilts, but I know that you can't use them in the crib so is that really a useful gift?

Or maybe something for a new mom to help her out? I have no idea what that might be - nipple cream? A sleep mask for those elusive daytime naps? A nursing cover?

Last question, how the heck am I going to get through the baby showers without utterly breaking down and bawling in the middle of at least one of them? I have only told one of the girls (my closest friend) about our pregnancy loss, and I'm not planning on bringing it up with the other girls. Talk about awkward and embarrassing.... if I just start bawling in the middle of happy-baby-time. :(

Hotslings live giveaway at Life Starring the Kids and Me

I had one of the worst days of my life yesterday. Up there with the three days of agony I spent recovering from a very painful surgery. Enough said.

I really am not going to be doing the lists for a bit but I came across a fun giveaway to share. Life Starring the Kids and Me is hosting a live giveaway for a Hotslings baby sling. It will take a while as the winner will be comment #1029 which is Victoria Arya's due date. You have to have Twitter, though, as the mandatory entry is a tweet.

Personally I am not into Twitter. Seems like one sure-fire way to be constantly barraged by meaningless comments. I haven't signed up and have no intention to. Do you like Twitter? If so, why?

One day at a time

I really appreciate how nice everyone has been, it's definitely been a rough few days. My husband has been great (after he got over his freak out on Friday!) and we have talked to a couple friends and some of our family, everyone's been really supportive. We're actually coping with this a lot better than I thought we ever would, Friday was devastating but each day that goes by is easier emotionally and honestly we are just looking forward to trying again.

I think the hardest thing for me was learning that the baby didn't make it past 6 weeks and there I was at 10+ weeks still singing and talking to the baby. Realizing that was so heartbreaking for me. But I do know that it was nothing that I did or didn't do, everything that I could control I was doing right so it was simply not meant to be. And I know a lot of women don't necessarily think this way, but for me I would rather lose the fetus earlier than later in the pregnancy, and rather have a natural miscarriage than have a baby that only survives a few days, weeks or years in pain because of some genetic or congenital problem.

I did have a vivid dream the other night that I was holding the tiniest baby. I had a chance to hold it and love it and it simply faded away in my hands. Although it sounds like a bad dream it was actually a good one, I felt really positive that things were going to turn out okay and I had a chance to at least say goodbye and know the baby was loved and cared for in its short life. I guess some mental closure came out of it.

So thank you again to everyone who sent a kind word or thought my way. I have a big art show coming up that is taking up a lot of my time over the next couple weeks so between our personal and my professional life things are pretty busy. I'm going to take a little break from the blog and giveaways but I'll be around, I do still have a TTC giveaway that I want to do in the near future and I promise that the giveaway lists will be back!

Coping

Thank you all so very much for the kind words and support. I have told my closest friend, who went through the same thing last summer and is now in her 6th month of her second pregnancy and everything looks great for her. I also talked to my mom and step-dad tonight about it, they were also very sad and supportive. We decided not to tell my husband's family until we have the good news of a healthy 12-week fetus next time, we just want to avoid the sympathy, curiosity and gossip that goes with a big extended family.

And my husband has really come around now that he realizes I wasn't just thinking the worst - the reality is that the worst is happening. I think he was still in denial and hoping it was some kind of mistake. He's been really sweet since last night once I started the real bleeding (TMI) and today, reassuring each other that we love each other and lots of hugs are getting us through it. He is very disappointed as well.

I've had a few good solid cries and that actually helped me get through the worst of it. I'm sure the grieving's not over but I feel like I can handle things a little better today than I could yesterday, that's for sure.

It will get easier once the cramps and bleeding stop and my body stops acting pregnant (I still have the nausea, skin issues, etc of the first trimester), once my belly goes back to normal, I will feel like I'm back on track and in a while we will try again.

We spent the day making jam and pie, weird thing to do but it kept my husband and I busy all day so we weren't sitting around thinking too much about what might have been.

How to devastate a woman.

So this is what's going on with me.

Friday morning marked 10 weeks and 3 days of my first pregnancy. I haven't really talked about the pregnancy with anyone because I loved having this sweet secret between me and my husband. Plus it was early so I wasn't ready to share about it yet. But I have been floating on happiness since the first positive pregnancy test.

I had been spotting a little since Tuesday and on Friday morning it was more. I called Telehealth right away and the nurse recommended I go to see my doctor as soon as possible.I gave my husband a call at work, he was away from his desk so I left a message - I'm sure - just saying I was going to the doctors and would call him when I got back. My midwife's office was closed, and she is in a town a half hour away anyway so in the interest of expedience, I went in to the doctor in town. She palpated my abdomen, did a pregnancy test (still positive) and requisitioned blood work for the BHCG levels and an 'urgent' ultrasound. I was crying in the doctor's office, and I felt she was pretty tactless about the whole thing. She kept talking about "if the baby died" (no easier words to help me handle it) and being all perky, saying "it's not the end of the world!" Maybe not for her but it sure felt like it to me.

I went over to the blood lab immediately and got the blood drawn for testing, still crying in the waiting room - can you believe not a single person asked me if I was okay this whole time, from the two receptionists to the 10 or so people waiting - anyway - I came home and was just getting on the phone to update my husband, when he came rushing in the door. He said my message was that I'd gone to the ER at the hospital, and he'd gone there to find me (of course I wasn't there). I swear that's not what I said but he swears it is. So he was pretty stressed and upset and of course on seeing him I burst into fresh tears and told him what had been happening. We called and got a rush appointment at the imaging lab for the afternoon.

At the lab they brought me in and lay me down on the stretcher for the ultrasound. She started it up and I could see very clearly that the screen was showing what looked like a black hole. She said she was seeing the gestational sac but nothing inside it. At that point she called my husband in, explained what was happening, I got to go pee (finally!) and then she had me lay down again for a vaginal ultrasound (TMI? sorry). The vaginal u/s showed a fetus but she said it was not the right size for 10 and a half weeks. It looked more like 6 weeks. She said there may be a dating discrepancy but she also could not find a heart beat (though if it were 6 weeks she probably wouldn't anyway).

After a couple of discussions on the phone with our midwife and the doctor's office, both suggested a further blood test on Monday to check my beta levels. But I already knew what was going on. I knew the possible conception dates and 6 weeks was not one of them. I was very upset and basically spent the afternoon crying. My husband was still living in denial and kept telling me I didn't know for sure what was going on. He actually got pretty angry and suggested that if the dates were wrong and I did have a six-week old fetus I could be causing harm by getting so upset. But he couldn't feel what I was feeling. I already knew in my heart what had happened. After the ultrasounds I started having cramping, and last night I started bleeding.

We have lost this pregnancy. I am devastated. And it will be harder still with so many of my girlfriends pregnant. I am surrounded by pregnant women and soon will be surrounded by newborns (literally - 4 of our 5 neighbours are pregnant as well, and there are two other newborns on our street). Of course I am happy for them but it brings our loss into sharp focus.

It feels so pointless to have gone through all this - the rollercoaster of emotions, the first trimester pains and constant nausea, just to have it end this way. I did everything 'right' that I could control. And I know the stats, it's not uncommon, it's probably a congenital defect or chromosomal abnormality, there was nothing I could have done, blah blah. It doesn't help to know that stuff. It still hurts like hell.

Worry...

I am in a bit of a panic here. Something big has been happening in our lives and something scary has been happening to me in the last few days. I called Telehealth Ontario this morning and the nurse said I should see my doctor 'within the next 4 hours'. I was calling for reassurance and what I got was WORRY! And now I'm waiting for my doctor's office to open so I can call and try to make an appointment (they are notorious for overbooking and being too busy).

I'm freaking out and my husband is away from his desk at work so I can't even talk to him. So I'm venting here... sorry about the vagueness, I think some of you might know or guess what I'm talking about but otherwise I will say no more...

I also had to postpone a client meeting this morning because of this, not good for business.

I have my fingers crossed that I'm stressing over nothing and will be told it's all okay - but that's what I was hoping when I called Telehealth too!

:(

...and more errands

Seems like every day it is something. Today I have to make an art store run, and drop off my husband's cleats for him since he forgot them at home and he's playing softball tonight. Also I'm going to hit the mall - I haven't been in ages and I am definitely in need of a few new items. I'm seriously frugal with shopping. It's a matter of personal pride not to spend a fortune on my clothes. So I will see what I can do with just a little money today. Lastly I want to go to Fabricland - I'm making a baby quilt for one of my seven pregnant friends and need some more fabric and batting!

The chiropractor.

I'm not sure if all my followers know this or not but there is pretty much always a giveaways list at the end of each day's post, you just have to read through (or skip over) a bit of my yammering at the beginning. The exceptions to that would be review posts.

So today I have a chiropractor appointment, and grocery shopping to do. Also high on my priority list is watching last Sunday's True Blood episode which I haven't seen yet! Although I may do that tomorrow evening since DH will be out playing softball.

I have been seeing the chiropractor (because it's free under DH's work benefits) for several months now. And honestly I think it does absolutely nothing for me. She uses this machine (the "Pro-Adjuster") to adjust my spine and also my tense shoulder muscles. Sometimes I am sore after but it doesn't seem to loosen anything up, and I am still getting tension headaches. I would definitely not be going if it weren't free - and I'm still thinking it's just a big waste of my time. Have you seen a chiropractor? Has it helped, or maybe not?

Some giveaways for today -

Not impressed with Obsessed

I just heard the new Mariah Carey single 'Obsessed', and I'm .... not impressed. I hope the rest of the album (coming out in September) is better. I know, I know, Mariah?! I confess, I'm a fan. I can't stand the ballads but I usually like her hip-hoppy pop. It's fun to sing along to - not that I can make dolphin noises myself. But this new single is just not doing it for me.

Anyway. I have lots of giveaways to share today since I didn't do a list yesterday - however I did do a review of a great little shop called Bullfrogs and Butterflies Boutique that somehow ended up a few posts back, so do scroll down and check it out. Today, lots of cloth diaper giveaways (and other stuff) to share.

For baby:
  • Win an organic receiving blanket by Organic Quilt Company at True Cuddles. Must be a subscriber. Ends June 28th.
  • Win a cute, inspiring, fair-trade, Canadian and organic onesie or tee from Squishy Fish at {Natural} Mommie! Some of my favourite adjectives. Ends July 3rd.
  • Win your choice of 5 different prizes (bObles fish, Pipa seat, toy xylophone, changing mat, or beach bag) at Canada Mom Deals. Ends July 10th.
  • Win a Smartipants cloth diaper at Among the Mess! Ends June 28th.
  • Win a $25 gift certificate to Bamboo Bums at Barefoot Mommy. Now, this isn't enough to buy one of their $32 cloth diapers but it certainly takes the edge off the price. Ends July 7th.
  • Win a Thirsties cloth diaper from MamaMomo at Mama Notes. Ends June 27th.
  • Win an Applecheeks cloth diaper! Info here, at the Mystical Kingdom. (Email entry, not blog entry for this one). Ends when they have 100 entries - no idea how many they have already though!

Cutworm solutions

You may recall I had some horrible problems with cutworms wreaking havoc in my garden a few weeks back. I've been seeing a lot of hits on this particular post from people searching for cutworm solutions. They're gross and destructive and I had an absolute fit when I saw what they were doing to my garden.

So three weeks later here I am with some things that worked for me.
  1. I picked up a jar of diatomaceous earth at a local garden centre. It's a white powder that you sprinkle on the dirt, made up of tiny sharp crystals that are harmless to humans and birds but cut up slugs and cutworms when they crawl across them. Granted, this stuff can't be good for earthworms, but the worms will return. The cutworms die within 48 hours of crawing across it. Note: you do have to do this more than once throughout the cutworm season (here it's May through June) as the diatomaceous earth seems to dilute enough from rain that it's not enough to do any damage to them. The jar I bought was $9 (Canadian of course) and should last me maybe three years, if they're as bad every year as they have been this year.
  2. The garden centre guy had another great suggestion. He said to pick up some large plastic drinking straws, slit them up the side, cut them to about 2-4" lengths (depending on how tall your plants' stems are from soil to lowest leaves) and snap them over the stems at the soil level, pressing them down into the soil until you feel resistance at the root. We went to a bubble tea place which has nice fat plastic straws and grabbed a few with our drinks (love bubble tea!). A few minutes with scissors in the garden and the plants were all sheathed in colourful plastic straws. I must say this is an unusual look for the garden but has truly saved many of our surviving plants (and the replants to replace ones the cutworms killed).
What sort of worked:
  1. I put a shallow dish in the garden (a clay plant pot base), about 3/4" deep. I settled it into the soil so the lip was even with the soil. I did notice some cutworms each morning had wandered in it and died in there because they couldn't get out. I left it dry with this result, on nights that it rained (or we watered) and the dish was full of water, again more dead cutworms in it. So it doesn't matter if it's full of water or dry. However this will only get rid of a few at a time and in a plague situation like we had it's not really enough on its own.
What didn't work:
  1. Putting cardboard collars around plants to try to deter the cutworms. Apparently they just don't have the gumption to climb walls to get to food. Theoretically, you create a collar of cardboard (my mother uses cut up cereal boxes, I tried paper towel rolls) and shove it into the dirt an inch or so as the cutworms travel quite easily and happily just under the soil surface. For me this didn't work but perhaps my collars were too small or I did a lousy job. My mother swears by it.
So for us the cutworms are now not nearly as bad - they are still munching on our radishes below soil level but I think another application of diatomaceous earth will help to alleviate that.

I really hope this helps someone else out as I know I was completely enraged and frustrated myself when I woke up to discover the destruction that had befallen my new vegetable garden overnight. Swearing ensued! But $15 bucks later ($9 for the D.E. and $6 for the delicious bubble teas and extra straws) we have our garden back to normal. That's not counting the plants we had to replace but next year we will be using these tricks as soon as we plant, not waiting for the destruction.

Good luck and happy gardening!

Yay, Friday!

My neighbour starts her mat leave today! A month ahead of her due date. Which will be nice for me because I work at home, it can be pretty lonely. Hopefully we can get together for walks or snacks or something! I just can't wait to meet her little baby, I'm sure she and her husband feel the same way!

I am only going to list a few giveaways today since my hubby will be home from work this afternoon. I'm not sure what the plan is but I doubt I'll be blogging! So here goes:

For baby:
For anyone:
  • Win Breathe Natural bubble bath at {Natural} Mommie. Ends tonight, June 19th, so hurry up!
  • Win a Mystic Wonders Laundry System or a 1-year Laundry ball at Jessica (Mommy to a 3yr old drama queen)! Ends July 1st. I got my Mystic Wonders set yesterday (after I did all the laundry of course) and am looking forward to trying it out!

Bullfrogs and Butterflies Boutique - Review

I had the good fortune to win a giveaway at Jamie's Precious Peas a while back. What I won was some items from Bullfrogs and Butterflies Boutique, from their Baby Treat Shoppe, which you will find has the cutest selection of perfectly wrapped baby treats!

One of the items I received was the Cutie Cannoli. How adorable is this? It's a sweet soft yellow terry burp cloth wrapped around a white Gerber onesie, all tied up with ribbon to look like a pastry straight from the Italian bakery.

I also got a Petit Four Sweetie which is made up of three soft reuseable wipes! They're terry cloth and a good size at 9x9". If you can bear to unwrap the pretty packaging!

Next up is the Diaper Cupcakes. They are Pampers Swaddlers 'cakes', wrapped with a pretty ribbon 'cup', with a washcloth 'frosting' and a cherry on top that is a bath bead for mom! Beautifully pulled together in a tulle wrapping, these are almost too pretty to unwrap. And the bath beads smell just heavenly. I'm sure any mom would be grateful not only for the treat for baby but the treat for her as well!

Here's another for you to drool over! The Kid-O Candies are cute little baby washcloths all rolled up into a candy and tied with tulle!

I have to say that Jennifer Williams, Bullfrogs and Butterflies' owner, is super nice and some kind of super woman too! A mom of four and an entrepreneur, she has come up with all these unique designs for baby gifts that are sure to please for baby showers, newborn gifts or just that special you-deserve-it present for a new mom. How does she find the time!

Some of you may know I have seven (!!) friends who are expecting. Good grief. It's honestly a mini baby boom over here. Some of my lucky friends will be getting some of these sweet treats at their showers and I know they will be oohed and ahhed over! It's not just the way they're wrapped, it's the quality and the care in design and execution that makes these baby treats special.

Bullfrogs and Butterflies Boutique
isn't just about the sweet treats, though. Oh, no. They have a great assortment of other products. The Layette Bouquets are a favourite of mine, they're super pretty and would make a stunning shower gift. They also have pretty car seat covers, accessories for baby, gorgeous baby blankets, and, well, lots more great stuff (check out the gift sets!). Not only that but they have an organic option where you can request your diaper or layette gift be made with eco-friendly 'ingredients'!

One more thing - I got a sneak peek at some brand new products that aren't even in the store yet! They are two completely natural skin care products. The first is a Citrus Mint Soothing Lip Smoother that is made with a list of great-sounding all-natural ingredients. Everything in it is not only recognizable (no parabens, phthalates, weird fragrances, colours or chemicals I just don't recognize) but it sounds yummy too. The second is Lavender Vanilla Organic Shea Butter. I'm all about avoiding the nasties that you will find in most skin care products (watch that Disappearing Male doc for good reasons why) and these two products hit all the right notes with me from the natural scents to the ingredients.

Okay, this all sounds so gushy and lovey, I know. I just am really thrilled with Bullfrogs and Butterflies Boutique, and happy to have the opportunity to share this great shop with my readers. Once I received the treats from Jennifer I knew I wanted to do a review here on my blog - and just for the record it was all my idea to do this, I wasn't paid for it or anything like that. I'm just happy to show my support for a mom-based business with such a great line of products.

Smile!

I hope everyone's having a good day. I'm a little grouchy today. First thing when I got up, I saw that my husband had dumped all the dirty laundry from our clothes hamper out on the floor. He has a softball game tonight so I'm guessing he was trying to find a pair of shorts to wear. But I wasn't too impressed to see a giant pile of dirty laundry on the floor left for me to pick up. There were a few choice words and grumpy thoughts as I picked it all up and put the loads in the wash (Thursday's the day I always do laundry).

I then went downstairs to see that my husband's fish tank is so low on water the filter is making all kinds of noises. This is entirely his project and honestly he does not maintain it. There is always an excuse, he needs a new part or he doesn't have time, whatever; meanwhile the fish tank is filled with algae, the fish don't get fed, there is a snail plague and the tank gets noisier and noisier as he doesn't top up the water. And it's right in our front room, the first thing people look at when they come over. Not cool. So I topped up the water (making sure it was the right temperature and adding the water conditioner) to keep myself from going crazy from the noise. I can't imagine the fish like that either, it must be so noisy for them. Grumpy, grumpy!

I'm trying to get over it and just smile instead!
Here's a giveaway list for today. Lots of good giveaways going on, especially for baby shoes! Yay!

More car issues...

I have yet another car repair appointment this morning. This time it's the alignment on our Civic. The last time they fixed it (less than two weeks ago) they somehow managed to throw the alignment out. So it will be a 'freebie' but it will cost me my morning. Ugh! I think the worst part of car appointments is sitting around waiting for the car to be ready. I'm not willing to sit in a room full of the fumes from new tires off-gassing, so I always head outside to go for a walk if they don't have a separate waiting area. Luckily our Canadian Tire is right beside the WalMart Supercenter so I can go there and pick up a few groceries, maybe read a magazine or something.

Anyway, that's my morning mission, here are some giveaways as well for today:

For baby:
For tots:
  • Win one of two sets of Brainy Baby DVDs at Swag Studio! These look like good learning tools for little ones. Ends June 25th.
For men:
  • Win a Lush prize pack for men at Barefoot Mommy! If you haven't tried Lush, you oughta! My hubby bought me some Lush bath bombs for my birthday and it is a rare luxury to soak in a gorgeously scented bath. Anyway! The man in your life would love this stuff! Ends June 21st.
  • Win a Nixxi men's tee at My Organized Chaos. Nixxi is a Canadian company :) Ends June 20th.
For anyone:
  • Win a Healthy Chef 4-in-1 food dehydrator, steamer, rice cooker and yogourt maker at Frugal Mommy of 2 Girls! I'd love one of these. Ends June 18th so hurry!
I hope you're enjoying these lists of giveaways! Please feel free to comment if you have something to say, sometimes I feel like I'm posting into the void :)

Also I'm thinking of having a TTC (Trying To Conceive) giveaway. I have a couple of products designed to help women conceive that I would like to give away. Would anyone be interested if I hosted such a giveaway?

Happy Tuesday!

It really feels like it ought to be a Saturday. The weather is so perfect here right now. I love getting back into my summer skirts and dresses! Not that I'm a super girly-girl, but I do love wearing dresses in the summer. They're so comfy. I hope it's just a gorgeous day where you are!

Some giveaways from out there today:

For baby:
more to come...

I'm having trouble with my internet connection today (something to do with this Mac and the VMWare Fusion, I think :S ) so the list won't grow too much today.

Mystery of the flattening tire

(I just got a Nancy Drew flashback - I used to love those books as a kid!)

Okay, so I took the car in on Friday - two weeks after the last time I took it in - because the same tire was flat. Another $25 to 'fix' the tire. They took out two nails (and showed them to me), but I am convinced they simply didn't find them the last time.

I brought it home, it sat in the garage all weekend... this morning we noticed that it's flatter than ever. What the...?! I'll have to take it in tomorrow AGAIN. And this time they'd better not charge me or I'm going to throw a noisy fit.

Grr.

Anyway, happy thoughts... here are some giveaways out there today...
